Curriculum Vitae
Profile:
Maria Hayes has shown work in galleries and at live events across the UK since 1986. The majority of her work is two dimensional, using a variety of media including drawing, painting, printmaking, mixed media and more recently, film. Hayes finds inspiration in the natural world, the human form, music, storytelling and dance.
Hayes combines this practice with education and training work in schools, galleries and Higher Education institutions across Wales and the UK. She is regularly commissioned to devise and deliver workshops and longer courses in arts and gallery education.
Hayes is currently engaged in a practice based PhD (Fine Art) at Aberystwyth University.
Hayes’s work is in private and public collections nationally and internationally.
Statement:
After 25 years professional practice as artist and educator I am currently engaged in a practice based PhD at Aberystwyth University. I work between digital technologies and traditional observational drawing practices. Could we lose something vital from our culture with the current emphasis on conceptual work and pure digital imaging in art and artists training? Will virtual technologies replace the hand made object? What implications does this have for the way we understand and express our selves through our bodies in relation to the material world?
In exploring how digital technologies develop my practice I demonstrate ways forward that combine the disciplines of digital imaging and observational drawing without losing the essential qualities of either. By mapping my way across the digital divide I seek to connect past traditions with present and future image making and to reconcile the body with the imagination.
I combine my work with other creative practitioners such as musicians, dancers, performers and poets. Collaboration between art forms has defined my work since the beginning.

Art Movement.
Article with image on my collaboration with Phoenix Dance Co at Leeds City Art Gallery. |
“Maria Hayes’ work is full of a graphic energy which is physical. Movement is, almost literally, expressed through the energy of her own body as it makes marks on her chosen media….The consistency in her work is a kind of handwriting, a line and gesture which recurs in different themes and projects.”
Mike Tooby.
Director of Learning. National Museums and Galleries of Wales.
